Tonight on my walk through the wetlands, I noticed a lot of cattails with "fuzz" growing out of them. After doing a little research on the Internet, I discovered that when cattails begin to disintegrate in the fall, they produce a "cotton" which is often used in the following ways:
- by birds to line their nests
- by native american tribes to line moccasins, provide bedding, diapers, baby powder, and papoose boards
- as fill for life vests
- as pillow stuffing
- as a source of ethanol
- to remove arsenic from drinking water
